Degradable plastic

Oxo-degradable plastics, just like conventional plastic materials, are still made of petroleum-based polymers. The only difference in property is that it contains chemical additives which allow the plastic to break down quicker than it normally would in presence of oxygen, heat and light. However, these products don’t disintegrate at molecular or polymer level like biodegradable and compostable plastics. Instead, they simply fragment into smaller pieces and eventually become #microplastics🌬left in the environment indefinitely. . Oxo-degradable plastic bags & packaging are often marketed as a better alternative for the planet, implying a reduced environmental impact after disposal compared to traditional plastics without additives - but are they really? It’s common that people get confused over the difference plastic terminologies - ‘degradable’, ‘biodegradable’, ‘compostable’, ‘PLA plastic’ etc. Something that sounds great in theory can be environmentally destructive in reality. Especially when environmental awareness and demand for sustainable products are on the rise, as consumers we should develop our understanding of these plastic terms in order to make well-thought-out purchasing decisions and properly dispose of plastic products at the end of use.

The labelling (or no-labelling) or plastic products can be confusing and misleading, so remember ‘Bring Your Own’ is always the best option. Make it a habit to refuse single-use plastics whenever you can; the little steps do help!
